Urban Expressions (UEX) is a Salt Lake City-based performance arts group specializing in the Winter/Color Guard field. Founded in 2000 with alumni of West High School and other Wasatch-Front schools, they formed the community-based performance group, Urban Expressions, to enhance dance skills, performance skills, team work, self-esteem, and confidence building in Utah’s youth.
This group travels the Utah Valley for various competitions, bringing home medal after medal. Urban Expressions also travels throughout the Western States for Winter Guard International's Regional Competitions and have maintained an extremely successful run. Utah's Urban Expressions also joins hundreds of other teams from all over the world for WGI's World Competition in Dayton, Ohio and have been named finalists and semi-finalists in various years.
Based in Salt Lake City, Urban Expressions’ “home” has always been West High School. It’s at West that UEX has had shared facilities to train, rehearse, and mentor the younger students of West High School’s and Northwest Middle School's team. UEX has also served as a mentor to several other winter guards throughout Utah by doing free student clinics and training their own members to be directors of other teams.
Throughout the years, trophy after trophy that the UEX guards have won are presented to the administration of West High School and those trophies are currently displayed in the hallways of West. The various Principals throughout the years have attended many of the competitions housed at West and presented awards to the more than 47 other groups that compete locally each year. The athletic director of West has helped to facilitate this all-volunteer community group to hold camps for our high school and middle school students during the summer to help with the transistion to high school and beyond.
